A machine polish can erase marks that sit in the top layer of clear coat, and it can transform paint that has gone dull and swirled. What it cannot do is put back material that is already gone. If a scratch has cut through the clear coat, polishing will not close it. You can tell which kind you have in ten seconds with nothing but your fingernail.

Factory paint is a stack of very thin layers, and each behaves differently under a polisher.

• Clear coat: the glossy top layer, and the only one polishing should ever touch.
• Base coat: the color itself, which has no gloss of its own and cannot be polished.
• Primer: usually gray, white or black, and a clear sign the damage is deep.
• Bare panel: steel or plastic, and on steel it starts to rust once exposed.

Clear coat is the thickest single layer on most vehicles, and it is still thinner than a sheet of printer paper. Polishing removes a little of it so the surface is level again and reflects light cleanly. Level a shallow scratch and it disappears, because the raised edges catching your eye are gone. Try to level a deep one and you run out of clear coat first.

How Do You Tell How Deep a Scratch Is?

Wipe the area clean so you are not feeling grit. Then run a fingernail lightly across the scratch, not along it. If your nail catches in the groove, the scratch is through the clear coat and into or past the color. Polishing will soften its edges at best, and the mark will still be there afterward. If your nail glides over with no catch, it is almost certainly a clear coat defect, which is exactly what polishing is built for.

Two more checks. Spray water on the mark: if it vanishes while wet and returns as the panel dries, it is shallow and a polish will handle it. Then look at the paint in direct sun at an angle. Fine circular haze across a whole panel is not one scratch, it is thousands of tiny ones, usually from car wash brushes and the wrong drying towel.

What Can a One-Step Paint Enhancement Actually Fix?

A one-step enhancement is a single machine pass with a pad and a polish that cuts and finishes at once. On clear coat defects it does real work: swirl marks, light marring from wash mitts and towels, oxidation haze on neglected paint, and shallow water spot etching, which sprinklers and hard water leave behind constantly around here. Reflections go from milky to clean.

What a one-step will not do is remove every defect on the car. Deep isolated scratches, sanding marks and heavy etching need multiple corrective stages, which is a different service entirely. What About Scratches That Catch Your Fingernail?

Those are a paint repair, not a detailing job. Depending on severity, the fix is careful touch-up paint or a body shop respraying and blending the panel. Anyone promising to buff out a scratch you can feel will do one of two things: thin the clear coat around it until the mark looks slightly less obvious, or burn through an edge. Clear coat is finite, and once it is gone, repaint is the only road back. If bare metal is showing, get wax or touch-up over it soon, because humidity and salt air start rust under the surrounding paint quickly here.

Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches?

Not the way the marketing implies. A ceramic coating is a thin, hard, sacrificial layer that makes the surface slick and water repellent, resists chemicals and UV, and makes every future wash easier and safer, which indirectly cuts down on new swirls. It is not armor. A key, a shopping cart or a highway rock chip goes straight through it. Coat right after the paint has been polished, because a coating locks in whatever condition the paint is in.
