Why Does One Bucket Put Grit Back on the Paint?

Dirt does not scratch paint by sitting on it. It scratches paint when it gets dragged across the clear coat under the weight of your hand. That is the entire mechanism.

With one bucket, the cycle looks like this. You load the mitt with soapy water, wash a section of the hood, and the mitt fills with the dirt you just removed. You dunk it back in the bucket. Some of that dirt sinks, but plenty stays suspended in the water and a good amount stays trapped in the mitt fibers. You carry it back to the car. Repeat that thirty or forty times across one wash and you have effectively worked the finish over with very fine sandpaper.

The sequence never changes. Load the mitt in the soap bucket. Wash one section, not the whole car. Take the mitt to the rinse bucket and work it against the grit guard until the dirt releases. Then, and only then, go back to the soap bucket for more suds. The soap side stays close to clean because the dirt ends up in the rinse bucket, under the guard, where it cannot reach your paint again.

• Clean, dry microfiber drying towels, swapped out rather than used until soaked and gritty
